Our smoke alarm started beeping in the night. Although the battery had not long been fitted I have changed it only for the alarm to continue beeping even more.

New alarm needed?

If you are sure there is no fire and the replacement battery was full, then it sounds faulty to me. They do need replacing every so often anyway.

Make sure the battery cover is properly closed.

(Sure it isn't a combined carbon monoxide detector also ?)
Agree with Geezer, check that the filter is clear also. I bought some new fire alarms in Ikea recently, very good value, its always better to be safe than sorry.
