You pull a couple of tiny clips off them and the ants go inside, feed on the bait and take it back to their nest. Within 24 hours every single ant had disappeared. I'm sure you could use these outside although you would have to cover them in case it rains and moisture leaks inside the air holes. Powder will also work but it looks terribly messy and the effects are eliminated by rain. Boiling water also works.
My ant problem was so bad I had to pay for the Council to come out. The man told me I had wasted my money, the best thing to use was two parts borax powder (available from chemists) and one part granulated sugar. Mix together and sprinkle where ants run. They take the sugar coated with the borax back to the next where they are killed by something called osmosis. I think they swell and burst (sorry). Anyway it worked for me and the ants hopped it.
