No they didn't - neither did Elvis.
There has always been a market for production companies and labels and writers who combine variously to produce pop music, it has been like that since the start.
That's why I have always said that Stock Aitken And Waterman were the Holland Dozier Holland if their era.
Rather than dismissing this format as 'invalid', I look at it as being a different way to write, record and produce music.
The Motown version appeals hugely, the modern pop equivalents, less so, but that is the way the pop world works. If I was sixteen now, the current pop output may well appeal - although I missed out on seeing T. Rex because I dismissed them as a 'teenybopper group' in their day, so maybe not.
But for me a huge part of the pleasure of music is debating its pluses and minuses, ever may they be out there.
