My son has never ever rented anywhere before but decided he needed to start somewhere so he heard of a house that had been converted into 6 separate rooms each with wardrobe ,bed, fridge etc. 2 shower rooms and full use of huge kitchen which was still being finished the day he viewed room. He liked it and paid deposit and signed 6 month contract. He's moved in and then three days later the landlord says he isn't putting in a washing machine as there is a launderette down the road. Well it didn't occur to my son that he wouldn't be installing one and he is really unhappy. It only will he have to drag everything to launderette and pay a fortune every time but also sit there and wait for it. Can he do anything at all? It seems a bit unfair.

Do what other lads do. Take their washing home to Mum.

Mum is 130 miles away
Washing machines in shared houses are always a source of trouble. They are better off without one.

Going to the launderette will just have to become one of those jobs he has to do.
If the contract said there was a washing machine then it has to be included, but if the washing machine was not in the contract there is nothing he can do.
I agree with Tilly, in a shared house with 6 rooms there are always going to be arguments over a single washing machine. Better off using the Launderette!
To be honest, it will prob be easier and less hassle to take it to the launderette.
If he puts everything in together on a cool wash, he'll prob get away with just 1, possibly 2 washes a week, so it shouldn't be too much hassle and shouldn't break the bank as well.
I shared a flat with 9 other lads when I was 18 .... it was enough hassle sharing the kitchen and 2 shower rooms - I couldn't imagine what it'd be like sharing a washing machine :)
with regards to having to wait, it's only quick (especilly if he doesnt dry) Commercil washers and dryers are much quicker. Plus laundrettes have wifi/newspapers/tvs nowadays
They are quick and you can get much more in them.

There's only two people who use the washing machine in this house and we still argue about it.
My local Laundrette is next door to my local Weatherspoons pub .
Problem sorted,as said a wash in a launderette machine only take 20 mins , remember to bring your own washing powder though. The tiny packs one wash packs of washing powder they sell in the Laundrette are very expensive!
try it and see
and move out in six months if it hasnt

does he read ? tell him to take a book and read it whilst the washing is doing
It is what we all did - makes you read a really boring book you have been putting off

I dont think any judge will say that no washing machine is a deal breaker unless the tenant said before hand it was
No one expected a washing machine in a rented house, back when I was a student and sharing houses. If anyone had one we'd see it as a huge luxury.

Going to the launderette is not such a chore. As it's just down the road, he could put his wash on and pop back for a cuppa for half an hour, then the same again for the drying.
