I have just fully reinstalled my laptop including formatting C so I had a completely clean disc. After loading Windows XP, then McAfee Internet Security, then loading my wireless internet connection, i started to download all the Windows XP updates. The first thing I was asked was to verify that my Windows XP was genuine. Now, I've performed this task many times, but this time it informed me that an unknown error occured during verification. Without verification, I cannot download SP2. Whenever I go to the Windows Updates page and try to download updates, i get the "Windows has encountered an error, do you want to send details to Microsoft, etc......."

Any ideas why I can't verify my Windows. I am using the same System Restore disc that I always use, so I definitely do have a genuine copy of XP.

Dunno, but isn't there an alternative verification process available that doesn't depend on downloading an activex component? I'm sure I was offered a choice of two verification methods. Have a look again and look at the 'small print'.
Don't know what stage the download fails, but have you tried doing it before enabling the internet security software?

Jenky - I wouldn't dream of going online before installing my internet security.
