I think it could be tachometer - this measures engine speed. A tachograph measures speed and distance

Sorry teacher1, according to Chambers, a tachometer is an instrument for measuring the velocity of machines or currents. A tachograph is a recording tachometer. The question calls for a record, thus tachograph.

Technically you are right gen2, but a truck tachograph records speed, distance and rest/working periods, all over elapsed time. It doesn't record engine speed...., but I bet tachograph is the answer.
