Credit Card Details

Had to ring a credit card company yesterday ( the number was the genuine one )as I was having problems setting up a D/D
I went through the normal security questions, gave the 16 digit number expiry date etc.
But the guy then asked me what was the 3 digit number on the rear of the card was.
Is this right?

I don't think the actual card company has ever asked for the security number, though - they usually have security questions about the name of my grandmother's dog etc.
But basically, I suppose that's what the security number is for. You don't need it when paying in a shop.
