Lorries have to have a diesel engine. Cars and vans don't.

//Lorries have to have a diesel engine.// not necessarily, a petrol engine truck is possible, but diesel engines deliver several advantages to the owner/user, principally in fuel economy, longevity and maintenance costs (eg petrol exhaust is corrosive and rots exhaust pipes in a way that diesel exhaust doesn't).
