I've never had a problem sleeping or getting to sleep...head hits pillow and I'm gone. Can even nap during the day and sleep well.
Until lately...always on a work next day night. Last weds I went to work on 3.5 hours, the weeks before 4- 4.5. Mind is racing and it's all about work.

Nailit, alcohol shrinks your bladder as it passes through. Drinking for sleep is a bad idea, as your bladder fills up very quickly and then wakes you up when it's full, so you have broken sleep. That's why you feel exhausted.
You appear to suffer from depression, so I would talk to a professional before considering Melatonin. Have a word with your pharmacist - it doesn't have to be a doctor. They will be able to advise you on a non-addictive solution, if they stock one. However, if they advise Valerian, you will find it far cheaper on Amazon and it sometimes turns up in Holland & Barrett's Penny Sales. That's when I've bought it.
A drop or two of lavender and/or Roman Chamomile essential oil(s) on your pillow helps many people drop off. A warm bath containing Epsom Salts, (read the container, you won't need to use much) and the above essential oils, just 7-8 drops of each, before bed will detoxify your body, relax your muscles and prepare you for sleep.
Sorry for the length of this, but sleep is VERY important for your wellbeing. I've had insomnia since I was very small and can empathise. I've learned an awful lot about sleep aids and can only pass the info on as I see fit.
