Avast Free
7 Answers
Unfortunately I have changed from AVG free to Avast free, and I do wish that I hadn't, I would change back but it seems that get rid of Avast is somewhat a difficult operation and I don't feel expert enough to carry the task out.
The main problem I have with Avast is that periodically a window will pop up starting that it needs to close down and restart my computer.
Anyone know what this is all about and how can I cause this annoying practice to cease?

Download this file to your computer:
http:// www.cpu id.com/ downloa ds/cpu- z/cpu-z _1.79-e n.exe
Run it, accepting the defaults, to install the program.
You'll find that you've got a new desktop icon. Double-click on it to run the program. That will find out about the main hardware in your computer, in a window which looks like this:

That's actually the result I've just got with my own PC. You'll see that the 'Instructions' field includes 'SSE2'. If you see the same you'll know that your CPU supports SSE2; if not, then use the uninstaller for older processors.

Not sure if this will help but any Pentium 4 before 2001 and AMD processors before 2003 will not have SSE2 so anything newer should have SSE2 support as for safe mode it is a method of booting your computer with the minimum amount of drivers generally tapping away at F8 when you start your computer should offer you a menu which then offers you the option of entering safe mode everything will look very large as video drivers are not loaded but will resort to your normal desktop once you re boot normally
Do you have any grandchildren who could help AOG? The young ones seem to understand much about technology.
You also said, I think, that your computer is old - the 'girly' suggestion would be to buy a new one using this as a reason.
I do know that the computer fails to react when you swear at it - regardless of the swear word used.
