Whilst mowing the grass today, I noticed a reasonably large number of small deep holes in the lawn, some quite close together. I have never seen them before, so would appreciate any advise on what is causing them, and more importantly, how I can get rid of whatever it is that might be causing them. Many thanks in advance for any help.

If there is no evidence of excavated soil on the surface (molehills) in the locality or close by, then I doubt its moles.
Could be ants nests.
Squirrels ??
My guess would be a bank vole. Grey and mouse sized but with shorter tail. See them all the time on the allotment and compost heap and in the grass.
If you lay a sheet of board or black plastic over the holes for a few days - you may see one if you lift the covering quickly.
Correct DB, moth balls and Garlic is the solution isn't it?

I'd guess something other than moles though, molehills are usually pretty identifiable. Mice or rats most like.
