You often see this phrase in cinema adverts.What is this mysterious list and why is it often necessary to suspend it?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.That's my understanding as well - local flim critic usually have passes, but these are not available when the 'free list' is suspended, usually for really high-demand films like 'Lord Of The Rings' - it is seen as unfair that some people are assured of a free-seat while paying customers can't get in.
yeah, that's what it is. a load fo my friends used to work in a bowling alley, cinema complex and could see films for free, except those for which the free list was suspended - mainly the big hollywood blockbusters on their first week or two fo release.
i don't know if the cinema sees it as being unfair that some people are assured a seat for free - i think they know they've got a better chance of selling out for the big films and therefore they can make more money!
