Sould There Be A Warning

before filling up at the pumps, I sorted out a friends car that was filled up with derv, it was a complete lack of concentration before he realised his error, should there be a warning "TONE" at the pump before fuel starts to flow?

I thought that the pumps' nozzles were adapted not to fit if it was the wrong fuel. Shows how much I know. :-(

On the basis that there are no blind drivers on the road, I would politely suggest that the colour coding is adequate.

I have had three cars all at the same time that required different fuels, it was my responsibility to notice which car I was filling up.

Yes Tilly, Derv nozzle's are thinner.

there is on some Shell stations now, TWR, inc our local one on the A30, and yes, the nozzles are different, especially in not putting petrol into diesel.

Petrol in a diesel engine wrecks it; diesel in a petrol engine just stops it.

yeo], petrol wrecks the compression by which diesel ignites, diesel prevents the sparking on the points and can be cleaned out - which is what TWR has done......

Done it myself. On a Friday in Exeter when I should have been travelling back to Leeds. The £200 to have the car taken to a BMW garage, the £90 train fare, spoiled Friday night and embarrassment at picking the car up ensured I've never done it since.

No DT not guilty of that " Honest" I have heard quite a few people doing it with a high cost to sort out, that last car I had was a derv, my present one a petrol & I always double check before pulling the trigger.

In the age of cheap electronics it should no longer be possible to
mis-fuel cars - a cheap transponder near the fuel filler on the car and a switch in the pump isn't rocket science - the pump bit is probably mostly already done - for many decades they have been equipped with a sensor that cuts it off when the car is full.
