I had a d&c and I believe this would be the case if the baby is lost before it is considered 'medically viable' (their words not mine, I add). I believe it depends on the size of the baby as to whether a D&C is recomended or birthing of the child.
However, I believe it also to be the case that in order to have a cremation you need a death certificate and they do not issue death certificates for babies that have died before 24 weeks. After 24 weeks I think it is considered a still birth, but before it is counted as a missed abortion.
I am so so so very sorry if this has happened to you. I have had several miscarriages, mostly before 12 weeks, but this one was very traumatic and I can fully sympathise with you and pass on all my love and condolences. The hospital in London where I was treated were really good and gave me the option of returning to the hospital in a few days time for the D&C from when we realised I was losing the baby. I opted to stay in and have it done that day. It was very sad, but they were very sensitive. I was even invited to a memorial service a year later at the hospital where we held a service for people who had lost babies at the time of year and we lit a candle and wrote in the book or remberence. We named the baby Georgie as we felt that would be appropriate for a girl or a boy. You have the option of returning for the service every year if you want to, but I chose not to the following year as I felt I had now come to terms with it.
I hope that you find something similar, but above all peace for the situation. This won't happen now, but it will in the future. You will never forget, but the tears do stop eventually. sometimes the sneak up on you unsuspectedly, but on the whole, you do smile again.

you cant get anything that early, i had to fight to get my 24 week son released to me so i could give him a funeral as the hospital insisted he was 23 weeks, also they wont do a cremation on a baby so small, my mum lost my brother at 28 weeks and was told not to have a cremation as there are no ashes to give.
The person in question is awful to say things lie that to your friend who truly knows the pain of losing a child

i had to have a termination at 14 weeks because my baby had a genetic problem, i had only gone for a routine scan when they found this, myself and my husband were devastated we had to go through lots of tests whilst i was pregnant, then i was told that i would have to go through the trauma of having my baby naturaly as the risks with doing a d&c at that stage were too high. i did and it was the worst day of my life, i saw my baby , he was fully formed just small and he just didnt have skin, we had to have a post mortom because of the genetic problems that he had and those 3 months were the hardest and lowest of my life, we were offered a cremation even though he was so small and we had a small blessing just 4 of us, but we have no plot of our own, there is a plot dedicated to all preborns, we were lucky to have this as it really helped me to move on, you never forget! i have had 3 misscarriges since all before 12 weeks and they were just normal d&c procedure (as they say) but thank god, i have a gorgeous amazing daughter now who is my world. so it is possible that this girl has had what she says, and i really hope that someone would never be so cruel to make a story like this up.
My daughter was the same as Burtone. Her baby had something wrong with it and she was given an injection at 14 weeks which brought on the labour and then she had to give birth. Fortunately she coped well and she knew it would not have survived. Unfortunately and quite understandibly a lot of people find it very traumatic.
