The survey in the article said the population was 87.2%, 2% mixed race, 6.9% Asian, 3% black and just 1% othere. Perhaps rather than trying not to appear racist or homophobic or whatever the trendy thing is (as the article imply) they should be looking at population % and cast accordingly. cassa, i don't think adverts only appeal to me if white people are in them (despite the fact i'm white). I quite like advertizers that share my world view too - ie that people can be gay or straight and it's no biggie; they can want to buy holidays, furniture and financial products.people can have different shades of skin and hair and it's unremarkable too
I'm an actress and we have this in my industry a lot. BAME actors are under represented and therefore some roles are specified BAME in most modern productions. Advertisers wants to keep their clients happy and flog their products therefore they must appeal to the broadest clientele by including people of their ethnicity, sex and shape. It's no big deal, and I don't know a white actor or model that feels hard done by.
It's been increasing obvious of late that advertising is geared more towards minority representation. Didn't need a newspaper article to tell us. Feels odd to see it more dominant since it doesn't reflect reality in the country. Sign of the times I suspect. Commercial concerns are always keener to attract new custom and assume loyal customers won't mind. They're probably right.
