Cleaning Gravel

I've got some bags of gravel that i need to clean before laying.After doing some research I've decided the best method will be to put small holes in an old wheelbarrow, empty the contains and then rinse with water. As there is a lot of reddish dust in each bag, I'm a little concerned about what the dirty water could do to the surface it lands on. Does anyone know if it will be ok to do it over grass, or white shingle (that has already been laid) I have read the reviews and people do say that it needs cleaning, but they don't say how they did it.

I'd sieve it first to get rid of most of the sand then wash as you suggest

I have a similar job to do, with some silt that got washed down by heavy rain and settled among my gravel.
Like Tony, I'm planning on using a sieve and rinsing it through with a hose.

You could put really fine holes in your wheelbarrow and let any washings collect in there then just put the debris into rubble sacks
