/// The police may not kill as many black people, but is that only because they do not routinely carry guns?” ///

I dare say it wouldn't take me too much effort to find such a person, ve -- probably I need look no further than some in my own family, for example, and at least two people who've posted in this thread probably qualify based on previous posts.

It's also a generational thing, I'd have thought. We *all* look on the past, to some extent or another, through rose-tinted specs; my own personal past is obviously rather more limited than most people's on here, but it's certainly no slur to say so. It's the human condition, is it not?
I don't know, TTT, that's his opinion on one subject so I wouldn't write him off as anti British just by that.
"A UK professor has claimed that the Union Jack is “not a symbol of pride, but oppression”, in a latest BBC Newsnight segment." - think he means the Union Flag but his view of the country is clear ummmm.
Refusing to acknowledge that British Imperial History was less than benign (to those who lived under it) does not magic it away.
Neither does acknowledging it make someone unpatriotic or anti-British....

More people of *all* colours would be shot/killed if our Police routinely carried arms.
What Jack said...
//Kehinde Andrews, a professor at Birmingham City University, has declared that the British Empire “produced a toxic national identity”

“All of this injustice is the direct legacy of the British Empire that often made its place in the world through genocide, slavery and colonialism.//

Perhaps he would rather be resident in Zimbabwe or Rwanda? Paragons of racial "harmony" donncha know.
Little of history seem to be benign. So that's hardly a point to make. Meanwhile our country and it's flag is still a symbol of pride. Or will be when we regain the right to make our own decisions and agree our own agreements with other nations.

I think he was exaggerating his case. I do wonder if there are a few too many people who look back on Imperial days with rose-tinted specs, but that's not quite the same thing.

I do wonder if there are a few too many people who in their head are living back in the 'Imperial days' This is a great country regardless of your colour.

I feel sorry 'for the likes of' Kehinde Andrews, AOG and mikey ... it must be awful waking up in a morning with nothing on your mind than looking for the next race-based argument.
Talbot -- obviously it goes without saying that it's just as bad to refuse to acknowledge the progress we have undoubtedly made, as ymb refers to for example. The difficulty is that people seem determined either to think that there's nothing more to be done or there's everything to be done still, and don't allow for the middle ground.

/// of course. More white people too. That's what guns do. ///

But you are forgetting that the police only shoot black people.

Please don't feel sorry for me, it's the likes of you that I feel sorry for, if race base threads upset you so much, why don't you hop over to ChatterBank and ask the question "What's for tea tonight"?

Incidentally Race Base threads are among the most popular threads, perhaps it is because one gets little chance to voice one's opinions on such matters, for the fear of being called racist, and the media, the authorities and the police seem just as scared.

By the way wasn't this one of 'your' race based threads, where you became the victim of the moderators, before you got your thread off the ground.

Talk of rose tinted specs, I would love a pair if I could see this country in the eyes that some on here do.

But I do not need anything, only my long memory, so as to remember this once great country that it once was, all those many years ago.

Yes we went through a world war with all the dangers that produced, after we still endured great austerity much more than today's so called austerity. But everyone carried on in that long lost British bulldog spirit.

Regarding that so called big bad British Empire, we gave the people employment, railways, bridges, viaducts, Dams, Public Buildings Law and educated their future leaders in our universities.

We must have done something right because when they gained their independence, rather than be ruled by their own leaders, huge numbers of them chose to leave their countries and come to Great Britain.
Sounds to me like you've been watching Life of Brian too much lately.
TTT "think he means the Union Flag"
As an aside the Lords of the Admiralty noted in 1902 that it was acceptable to use the term Union Jack for the flag wherever it was flown and this was given Parliamentary approval in 1908; taken from here http://hansard.millbanksystems.com/lords/1908/jul/14/the-flying-of-the-union-jack
I'll have to have a little lie down, ymb.

More guns means more people killed, because that's the only thing anyone carries a gun for. Gun law is one of the things Britain does far better than the US. (Healthcare too.)
aog, they'll kill white people if they happen to be carrying table legs.

This man is clearly not an idiot, but his views are somewhat extreme, and I would suggest they are without real merit, and are not especially thought through before being expressed.

But it is just his opinion - I think the best thing to do is ignore what he says, it's not rational enough to be worth debating.
I luv you aog x
I am grateful for your research Fitzer, berated as a child like most on here no doubt it is refreshing to note that it is indeed valid to refer to the flag in Naval terms even on dry land. Union Jack it is!
