I'd prefer it if they just reduced the prices instead of spending loads of dosh on stupid mini films.

I'm not sure it's a zero sum game. I think the stores find it is cost effective as it boosts sales. It's possible that this keeps prices higher than they need be based on supply and demand- but it's also possible that the extra revenue from increased sales means the stores are less likely to put up up prices to increase margins to maintain revenue which they might try if they are short of sales
