Animated movie from late 80s?

I seem to recall watching an animated movie (though it might possibly have been an episode of a series) at some point in the mid/late 80s. The main character is a young boy from some future world, who runs away and gets lost in a forest. He gets attacked by some sort of metallic alien crows and rescued by two men who take him to their ship, where they need to put a metal plate in his head. I don't recall the entire movie, but at the end an old man with a metal plate in his head is comforting the boy's family, and it somehow turns out that the man IS the boy, though I don't recall how he ended up travelling through time. Does anyone know what it's called? It's been driving me nuts for years. Thanks.

It wasn't called Time Pirates or something like that was it? I remember a bit where the old man and the boy are having a conversation over a walkie talkie (or the sci fi equivalent), and the old man is trying assure the boy that his parents will find him - or something.

The old man and boy talking over the walkie talkie with him reassuring the boy that his parents will find him sounds very familiar, but I don't recognise the name, though that might just be my lousy memory. I can't seem to find anything online about it, though. It's not mentioned on the IMDB. Do you know where I could find out more about it?

I was hoping for instant recognition when I saw the name, but I guess that was expecting a bit much, huh? It does look amazingly familiar, though. I'll have to get it and see. Thanks for taking the time to find out what it is.
