These were elections for governors rather than Senators. Not clear they mean that much. You have to wait for the midterm elections next year, really, to see which way the US public is going on Trump -- and even that may not be a very good signal, as the Democrats have something like 27 of the 33 seats up for grabs already.

The only possible reason I can think of, and the only one I have seen, for British people to support Trump is simply to annoy people who don’t like him. Or for effect. Not dissimilar to some on the left for example who take up bizarre causes in order to appear ‘with it’ :-)
