average size woman..
23 Answers
what is the average size of a woman? because last night Gok Wan on "how to look good naked" on channel 4 was saying that the girl was one size lower than the average size of a UK woman (she was a 14), i always thought it would have been a 12 or maybe 14? i work in a clothes shop and we always get i think 1 size 8, 2 size 10's, 3 size 12's, 2 size 14's, 1 size 16, and 1 size 18.... i think we do anyways, its something like that - we usually only get about 1 size 16 &18.
so therefore i was wondering if its true that the average size is a size 16? because most highstreet shops dont seem to do many clothes in that size.
many thanks

Not sure I agree with the first point in your post, Goodsoulette ~ most high street fashion is indeed fantastic for bigger women. Unfortunately we just have to find the right size and quit being embarrassed about purchasing it ;o)

Goodsoulette...i did read your answer properly. in fact i agreed with you that some women should reconsider their outfit before going out.
However, you said the problem lies in the fact that bigger women can't wear high street fashion. My point is most of the time big women don't have the choice whether they want to wear it, or whether it would suit them...because the choice is taken out of their hands as it's not made in larger sizes.
All i'm trying to say is...whether it looks right in (in your, my or anybody else's opinion) is beside the point....people should have the choice, and not be told that because you're a size 16 (or larger) you're too big to wear our T-shirt, etc, which is basically what the clothing manufacturers are saying, is disgraceful.

Funnily enough although we are told the average is a size 16 I think this is probably because of all the extra large ladies bumping up the smaller sizes. If you say 12 is a standard there are only really 3 sizes below that (maybe 20 people in UK who need a 4) but there have to 10 standard sizes that would be available going the other way. I dont know that many women who arent in the size 8 - 16 range, most falling on a 10 or 12. They arent going to make clothes in every size it just wouldnt make them money.
