Why do we have this paradigm? Why cant we just accept that some people find relief in things that may be a bit different from your own ideas?

As long as their choices don't affect others, then it's fine. I'm asthmatic - people smoking/vaping near me affect me. As for the generality: the other bit is that some people 'finding relief in things' can cost the rest of us a lot in the resulting, necessary, medical care - which costs all of us ands clogs up the hospitals. Sorry, but it is true.
I don't think it's quite that simple.
Do I object if someone wants to drink themselves stupid?
On first sight, the answer is no, but ...
If that drinking leads them to a night in A & E, or a police cell, then yes I do object, because I pay my taxes so medical staff and the police can look after deserving individuals, not self-harming idiots who can't adopt a mature attitude to their pleasures.

It's amazing how quickly what is and isn't acceptable changes. I hardly ever see anyone smoking now, and it's amazing to think that it's not that long ago that you could smoke on a plane! Someone I was working with travelling round Europe refused to get on a plane because the only seat available was in the row behind 'Smoking'.
I can remember grotty, stinking tube carriages, and Glasgow and London buses practically dripping with nicotine in the winter. Mores and standards can, and do, change very quickly - maybe vaping will be next to be socially unacceptable?

Some of those things can make earning a living impossible. I don't mind supporting people on benefits who have no choice but not because of their life choices. Similarly if choices affect people's control and judgement then I don't think they should be allowed to drive, have kids, pets and so on....I agree with the others....fine where those choices don't affect others, not fine when they do. I am not talking here about people with addiction issues because IMO that takes away choice....still think they shouldn't be driving or being responsible for others though.
