I know of someone who was drafted into the Brexit department from the private sector and she gave up after four weeks. Every department is a separate and competeing organisation that is out to protect itself.

She said that there were over a hundred government officials and workers BUT she advised getting rid of the lot and getting half a dozen private sector people in and they would do the job in double quick time.

The sheer incompetence and timewasteing is phenomenal So it is no wonder we are in the situation we are now. It has nothing to do with difficulty and everything to do with politics.

Foolish as I am, I expected my government to stand by its commitment published in the pamphlet it sent to every household in the UK:

"This is your decision. The Government will implement what you decide."

Of course that commitment was made on the understanding that the electorate would not be foolish enough to vote to leave (especially in view of the dire warnings of the consequences contained within that pamphlet and elsewhere). But that's not my fault. I expect that commitment to be honoured despite the result of the referendum in the same way as I expect it to be honoured despite the difficulties involved with doing so.

The pamphlet didn't say that the commitment would only be met if a "pro-Brexit" government was in office. It also didn't say it would be met only if it didn't cause too much bother.
