It used to be that people “seeking political asylum” were those in the public eye, who had spoken out about their own county’s oppressive regimes, and were in genuine fear for their lives. Or “defected” (Rudolf Nureyev, Nadia Comăneci), as they were being constantly monitored, for no reason other than who they were.
Now any old Tom, Dick or Harry can decide they fancy living somewhere else that is a better place than their native rat hole, just by using the word “asylum.”
No, I don’t accept this, and the only thing that can be done is to refuse entry, and deport those who have come in under the radar.
We are overloaded, and overstretched, and it’s time governments from the more civilised world, put their own tax paying citizens first.
