what was hadrians wall used for?

It is widely believed that it was built to keep out the Scots, but I did read somehwere that it was actually to mark the furthers outpost of the Roman Empire.

For whatever reason though, it was considered the worst posting you could get!

the wall was used to keep the scots out as the romans thought that there was no way to get them to follow the roman ways thus hear ended the roman empire but there i a wall in scotland so guess they must have managed it the wall in scotland is called the anotine wall

..... dear me. The Antonine Wall and Hadrians Wall are two entirely different things. Hadrians Wall was built in 122AD. Fifty or so miles to the North the Antonine Wall was built in 144AD. The Roman's later retreated from the Antonine Wall back to Hadrians Wall in 160AD. Here at http://tinyurl.com/jtojm is a Roman soldier .........

Hadrian's Wall was built to prevent military raids by the tribes of Scotland to the north, to improve economic stability and provide peaceful conditions in the Roman province of Britannia to the south, to define the frontier of the Empire physically, and to separate the unruly Selgovae tribe in the north from the Brigantes in the south and discourage them from uniting.

iknow the two walls are diffrent iwas just pointing out the reason for the wall and how they seemed to have got the scots around to there ways thus the reason for the second wall and as for 50 miles try twice that distance so dear me back try reading the reply before commeting
