Most plans though include a 'deductible' ( = 'voluntary excess'), whereby the policy holder pays the first part of any claim. The average 'deductible' is roughly the equivalent of about £3000.
It also needs to remembered that the cost of health insurance can vary considerably across different states, with the costs in Alaska typically being well over double those in Utah.
Before you can even start to worry about all that though, you'd need to work hard just to get a residence permit. My friends retired to the States where (because they'd got family connections) they were fully entitled to reside. However it still took them over 2½ years to get through all of the paperwork.

also be aware that there is an entire industry that exists only to get out of paying claims and their favourite tool is non disclosure. essentially you have to declare every pre condition you and the previous N generations of your family has ever had. The slightest omission or error = claim refused. The US health system is fundamentally barbaric.
sadly sue, most of the world does not have a civilised health system. The US is one of the most expensive and brutal, many indigenous Americans don't have cover. We often criticise the NHS and of course it has problems but the one thing we should be proud of is it's fix first and ask questions later ethos. Many an expat has returned once they start needing health care. Watch this documentary by Michael Moore, a real eye opener:

I do not wish to start a whole realm of correspondence but I have had nothing but good to say about the NHS. The media seem to report all doom and gloom. A interesting comment ( which I am sure will kick start loads of comments)is "if it weren't for alcohol, drugs and obesity how busy would the NHS be?". Yes I know it is an addiction and all the do goobers answers but........should one not be responsible for oneself?
