Rake, aerate, apply treatment. Repeat ad nauseam. :(
Yet to find one. Chemicals can kill it off but if the lawn is not draining well it will soon return. I suspect the only solution is to excavate down a few yards or more, and carefully refill with a good draining fill of some sort, and then start a new lawn on top.
best way is to improve your lawn. remove shade, improve drainage, rake out the moss, resow adding sand and grit as you do so.
Moss is normally down to poor drainage, so your grass needs a good forking and fill the holes with sand, get some law feed, weed and moss killer, apply this before its due to rain or water after applying, when its all gone black you can rake it out, give the bare patches a good raking to scratch the soil and re seed, speak to some one as you may need a certain type depending on the location of your garden and the direction it faces.

Soluble Iron Sulphate for a quick remedy.....or a lot of hard work sorting drainage problems for a longer one.

Aftercut - it will turn the moss black and it makes the grass greener and thicker. just waiting for my grass seed to take where there was moss and no grass!
I agree with others, its usually a sign of poor drainage, which can be improved by aerating the lawn, manually with a solid, or hollow tine tool or the mechanical equivalent or even a every-day garden fork, to make the holes to fill with lawn sand, using the back of the rake, back and fourth to fill the holes.
The existing moss can be raked out with a wire rake or scarifying machine.
Alternatively chemical lawn moss killer, which will only act as a temporary fix and the moss is likely to soon come back.
It seems to me that improving the drainage is a no brainer
