Broadband Only Deal ?

I was checking Broadband only deal for a friend(i know bundles are more cost effective) -he wants minimum 100mb , looking at comparison sites it seems Virgin Media only offer this??? .Also amazed that another provider offered 17mb only

In my area (Lancs), Virgin is the only option for this speed, however they refuse point blank to provide Internet only. I must take their landline also, even though I hardly use it.

The maximum speed available through an FTTC (fibre to the cabinet) connection is 80Mbps. (That's a nominal figure; in practice the maximum is usually 76Mbps).

Higher speeds require FTTH (fibre to the home) connections, which are only available in under 5% of UK homes.

Someone living alone and, say, streaming TV services over the internet, while browsing the web at the same time, only needs a download speed of around 3Mbps. 5Mbps might be slightly more reliable. 10Mbps is in the 'luxury' class for such a person and anything above that is totally pointless. (That person wouldn't notice any significant difference if he'd got a 100Mbps service. He'd simply have far bigger bills to pay).

A large family, with several teenagers all playing video games at once, while Mum and Dad each separately stream video services, might need around 30Mbps (or even perhaps up to 50Mbps). Anything above that is totally superfluous and will just give them a bigger bill without offering any extra benefit.

So what does your friend actually need 100Mbps for?

Also , yes jazzyjen VM always push for a bundle deal here in midlands aswell .Think it is a national policy

You keep saying this but it is not true.

Broadband speed is also about how long it takes you to download something.

So for example if you want to download a film from the internet it will take ages at 3 or 5 or 10 mbps but can be fully downloaded in minutes at 100mbps or 150mbps.

Also if you are on Windows 10 then these regular full downloads of Windows 10 updates could take an hour or more at 3 or 5mbps but could be downloaded in minutes at 100 or 150 mbps.

You often suggest old refurbished PCs and suggest 3 or 5 mbps is fine, but not everyone wants to sit in front of their PC waiting ages for something to happen.

It is like suggesting a pushbike is fine for going to the supermarket 10 miles away, when a car would get you there in minutes.

You need to accept that a fast PC and fast broadband makes using a computer much more pleasant.

I asked my friend why he wanted 100mb and he stated it was the only time he finally got decent net speed and connection
