I hardly ever respond to provocation.
For example, I can honestly say that in around half a million miles of driving I've never sounded my car's horn in annoyance at another driver, nor shaken my fist, raised one or two fingers or anything else. I simply shrug my shoulders and ignore things.
When I worked on the railways I attended a course on 'conflict avoidance', where we were all given scores out of 40 to indicate how likely we were to get into conflict situations. One train conductor (who had a reputation for having to call the police to sort out problems) scored 38. Everyone else, with just one exception, scored between 12 and 27. I was the exception, with a score of just 3.
