Tax And Mot Query
My tax and Mot run out at the end of the month. I have tried renewing tax online but get an error message basically saying “ unable to find MOT “ Is the site blocking the application because the MOT is running out, and I need a new one first. Tried ringing DVLA without much luck.

Sorry Togo, that is complete nonsense. As long as vehicle has an MOT in place on the date you wish to purchase VED, you can do it. I did so last month, taxing (12 months,VED to be exact) one of my cars, for which the MOT expires in three months.

You can, but you cannot renew it. I tax two vehicles ONLINE on a monthly basis and when the MOT is due I am contacted and told that my tax will not be accepted without notification (from an MOT centre) that the MOT is valid. This was all introduced a couple of years ago as part of the anti terrorism legislation and is now catching up with everyone, not just the online users. Until the MOT centre has confirmation from DVLA that your motor is indeed noted as mot'd they will not hand over a certificate. The loopholes have been closed on the "vary" your tax and mot dates to avoid the MOT for as long as possible. Plus plod now has auto systems that check every number plate for valid tax, insurance and MOT, and the next step is the traffic wardens will get them as well. Believe me.
Togo, if you look at the link you will see a reference to "What documents do I need....." That gives you all the information you need. Electronic communication of MOT with the DVLA started way before May. You appear to be paying by Direct Debit, in which case of course they won't let you continue to tax your vehicle if you are likely to have an expired MOT. I don't pay by Direct Debit and have had no problems at all. Law enforcement agencies have had ANPR for a long time and anyone can check if a vehicle is taxed and has a current MOT by going online. You can also check if a vehicle is insured if you are involved in an accident (data protection laws make it illegal if the vehicle is not one you drive). There is nothing new about this. I would like to see a link about how all this is tied in with anti-terrorism law.
