It happens when the extraction site fails to form a proper clot, or the clot breaks apart, and infection sets in. I had that last March with an upper front tooth was extracted. It often happens when back wisdom teeth are removed, but some of us have it happen with any tooth's extraction.
If it is dry socket, you'll need antibiotics to fight the infection, and the surgeon usually packs some medicine directly into the extraction site as well. If that's what it is, those steps will provide relief and healing in just a few days.

Best of luck to you, flump. Dry socket was incredibly painful for me; it's amazing how so small an area can affect one's entire being. And sometimes doctors can think we're not being patient with the healing process. But extractions without complications usually feel much better after 2 days. So don't leave the office until you get a proper exam and some good meds!
