another gout question, anyone who has it or who knows a suffer please reply. my doctor i feel is a nice guy but he is useless .
ive now had 2 serious attacks in 1 week or so, usually i get 2-3 attacks in 1 month, my history is i have some liver & kidney malfuctions abnormalities, i never so much as drunk a glass of water for years. now i try to drink 1 litre of lemon water a day but it still makes me belth i hate it.
i reading that taking lemon water per day is good, i also ordered celery seeds and i munch on them this last few days , i ordered omega 3 fish oil hi strength also. tart cherry juice is meant to be good but at £4 a pop from tesco its expensive for a small bottle and i would probably throw it up.
should i take vit C pills ? i eat very very little and maybe do not get enough vit C into my system, i do suffer from bulimia ( yes im a walking nightmare )

does gout have any link to kidneys ?

not that I aware of....get yourself assessed for Purinol as that works well for me - once I got through the first six weeks and all that uric acid released.

Naturally, cherries and cherry juice is recommended, raspberries as a second-string.
and the worst thing for triggering attacks for me was green asparagus - and I can eat it now.

btw...not once has doc proscribed me alopurinol for preventative treatment , neither does he give me colchicine on repeat ( maybe only because of toxicity to my kidneys )

i do not know what to do to protect my kidneys but at the same time lower the uric acid / crystals in my body.
list of foods my doc says i cannot eat - meat, chicken, poultry, liver, pork, fish, tuna, shell fish, crab, any ready meal or processsed foods, mushrooms, some vegetables even. no beer or fizzy drinks...
my god !!!

i am allowed green leafy vegetables...tut !
Certainly does......i would guess that almost half the people who suffer from chronic gout, have a degree of chronic kidney disease, due to oxalate crystals being deposited in the kidney.

DTCwordfan. thats ok but listen to this , i have a friend, she works in kidney dialysis dept, she now has a patient in 18 yr old girl who had kidney problems but is now suffering from gout and she has been on alupurinol and its affecting her kidneys more that she now needs dialysis

thanks sqaud

what can i say to my doc about this as he has not once got me an appointment to get my kidneys checked out
Alopurinol does not affect the kidneys in Gout.
Go back and see your GP.

ok sqad thanks, but can you think of anything else that i can do ?

would alupurinol not have toxics which can damage kidneys further ?
Question Author
would love a nice steak and tomatoes with onions but cant have either
I would go back to the GP, tell him that your gout is out of control and could he perhaps consider Alopurinol ( this does NOT ) damage the kidney.
Also if he could repeat your kidney tests to see if you have and if you ave, Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and if so at what stage is it.
If the blood tests show Stage 4 or 5 CKD, then would he refer you to a Nephrologist (kidney specialist).
Alupurinol is no good for an acute attack but is certainly invaluable in reducing the number of attacks.
Don't get too obsessed with dietary triggers.
I had gout in my hands about 18 months ago. My GP prescribed Allopurinol tablets (100 mg), one a day with or just after a meal. One a day turned out to be not enough, so my GP told me to double the dose, which I did, and I have had no gout since then. I have had no side effects at all.
You need to isolate what it is in your diet that is triggering the gout - for me it is too much bacon or sausages.

Try cutting out anything with a strong flavour - stop the lemon juice and anything with fruit sugar in it, and see if that makes a difference.
If it keeps happening then you need allupurinol. Diclofenec is good for occasional attacks but should be be taken long term. Tart cherry is good, you can get 3 litres from Amazon for £15, much cheaper than tesco et al: Amazon.co.uk User Recommendation mix with cranberry for a natural blood thinner and anti inflamatory. You must drink plenty of water not sure why you don't. You must be dehydrated and that is very bad for gout. I've had it since the early 90s, I take 1 allupurinol a day. Sounds like you need a second opinion from your GP.
"would alupurinol not have toxics which can damage kidneys further ?" - no, allupurinol is one of the oldest treatments about over 100 years old, and cheap as chips to boot! There may be side effects but I haven't had any. Among the most serious things that trigger gout are "purines", eg Beer, offal etc.
yes, and on allopurinol, your doctor should monitor your bloods every six months, one of the things being uric acid levels - I'm due for the needle on Friday.

the beer has maybe been the cuplprit, ive stopped any beers through week and limit a few beers on weekends.

few months ago i ate a few shellfish / prawns with thai fish sauce & spicy chillies, not many but within 3 hours my knee had swollen up and i was in severe pain.
go over to cider instead of beer much better for gout.
Question Author
wondering if sugar is the issue , i have stayed off beer, been eating ceasar salads all week, last night i ate 2 packs fruit pastilles and this morning my toe is throbbing and sore so ive whacked colcocine into me now and some celery seeds so hopefully as ive caught it early then it wont go full blown
as Sqad says ... foodwise, it could be anything. But allopurinol works and (says my GP) side effects are negligible. You may have to experiment to find the amount you need.
