Can anybody tell me if the school year has ever been January to December. My sister who was born April 1944 and went to school in Nottingham says that when she was at school it was like this. Not September to July as it is now.

There was nothing in the Education Act 1944 (which controlled state education when your sister was at school) to say how the school year should be arranged. No FF, I was 12 before I entered secondary school. Sorry if I've misunderstood the OP.
No problems maggie. The question was corrected later on. Are you sure you were 12 though?
Have sorted it. I put "what age did children go to secondary school in 1955 on google and up came "start of the school year (archive)". Lots of comments from 2010 confirming this.
The Mitch in that thread Mayalynne was rom Nottingham too. I'm not sure if it was the same across the country

Yes FF was born December 1946 and entered secondary school in August 1959.
Thanks maggie- must have been quite a range if some entered at age 12 going on 13 and others at age 10 going on 11
Obviously when it was altered it must have been bit of a mix up that year with some having to stay a few months longer to compensate but that's like any change. It happens
