Withdrawing some money earlier, it went through my mind when exactly had ATMs first operated. I found this link from last year, Reg Varney doing the grand unveiling!

I didn't know it was that long ago, but it was before my time anyway. I first used one in the 80s.

How did people manage? Have we just got a whole lot busier? What a fantastic difference it must have made.

Neither did I Clover! The picture of the crowd made me laugh, what? ... Money out of the wall???
Were people against / wary / un-trusting of using them when they were first introduced ?

Most probably Bazile, it looks like it was still a very archaic method of extracting a small amount of money though when first launched.

I remember using Barclays ATMs in Sheffield in the mid 70s.

There were no plastic cards; you had to get the bank to post you a pack of five punched cards, each of which could be used to draw the princely sum of £10.

There was a re-ordering slip in the envelope with those punched cards, which you could post back to the bank when you needed some more punched cards. In practice that often meant posting the reordering slip back as soon as you got it, so as to be sure of not running out of punched cards.

I remember my weekly trek to the bank, queuing up to cash a cheque. Banks were only open 10 -3 and as most people could only go in their lunch break the queues would be horrendous.
