but SK, it's not just the right-on brigade. both mainstream parties take the view that it's not the state's job to make people prove their identity (as the present legislation does), and "demedicalisation" of gender identity will happen, it's only a question of when. in answer to any protest question, like "yeah but what about karen white", the official line is likely to be "some rapists say they're trans. get over it".
the bigger risk of self-identification is not the odd rapist though - wrong though that is. it is of abusive men using "transition" as a route to locate and torture vulnerable women, those who (say) run to refuges......
