What Will Cut Through Oil?

I dropped a bottle of olive oil on the kitchen floor and the lid came off. I wiped it up with an old tea towel and then soaped it down with hot water and washing up liquid but it is still slidey. What else can I do?

something like surgical spirit or meths then floor cleaner?

Just keep doing that. It takes a while.

My toddler daughter got into a cupboard when I nipped to the loo and tipped a whole bottle over her head. Took ages to clean up.

Open up your kitchen to the public as a skating rink, perhaps?

A really thick mixture of washing up liquid and water (perhaps 1 part w/u liquid to 2 parts water), wiped of with a large quantity of kitchen towel would be my first step. Then, since the residue of w/u liquid would probably leave it's own slippery residue on the floor, I'd attack that with lots of hot water and loads of kitchen towel.

I'd actually buy a load of J-cloths, better than kitchen towel.

For future reference.....absorb as much oil as you can with cloths, kitchen paper etc -then use neat washing-up liquid and emulsify the remaining oil (wiping the whole area over) BEFORE you use very hot water over the area.

Surely it depends on what material is on the kitchen floor? Wood? Natural Stone? Slate? Lino? cushion flooring? I would not advocate putting meths on anything! Fairy liquid (no substitutes) is my go to cleaner, but I'd be a bit careful with it on a wooden floor.

use a strong solution of floor cleaner and hot water

A bottle of olive oil was dropped onto a carpet in our shop. Puppy training pads were put down after the obvious liquid was cleaned up - they dried up much more oil that we thought they would.

Isopropyl alcohol is about the best degreaser going but you must mop up the resulting dampness thoroughly. Repeat as necessary. The challenge in the UK is to find the stuff - try car spray workshops and/or those who supply them.

The best degreaser is washing powder it works on all sorts of grease/oil spills or even normal cleaning jobs
