The Scottish Government has launched a consultation int its proposed ban on smacking children. To me it is a no brainer. How can anyone believe that teaching children that violence works as a solution is logical or sensible?

That maybe, Sqad....but a smiling one now.....
I have this vision of my son, having been brought up to learn that you deal with bad behaviour from others by giving them a mild slap, a tap or a smack on the back of the legs......

The chap next to my son at the bar is rude and cheeky towards him...so my son gives him a mild slap on the back of the legs...... :-)))
LOl........magic........LOL ^^^
She does have a point though Sqad, isn't it better to do set a lead by example with a child rather than go down the old 'do what I say not what I do' route?
Kvali.......we have done all this many many times and we all know from which direction each AB is coming.
It is getting boring as you quite rightly posted on AOG's News post.
I can and will not add anything more to my opinion.
Just me and sqad then,lol.
^^^Not quite...

Just because I chose not to smack my kids, I wouldn't sit in judgement on those that do.

There's a world of difference between a smack and a beating.
In the cold light of day and with no unruly kids round me it's easy for me to say that smacking is awful, however I'll hold my hand up and say that i've smacked both my children when they were little for their wrong doings- and so far neither have disowned me or turned into violent people!

I do however as a rule dislike it, the smackings i inflicted years ago were, as said by others, out of my anger and frustration at what they were doing.

So im on the fence really in all this. I can see both sides.

As someone else has mentioned, how on earth will this be enforceable anyway? Most punishment is done at home, are they expecting children to 'dob' their parents in?
It's just lazy parenting to discipline by smacking the small person who you decided to bring into the world.
I was smacked as a child. It was not traumatic as it was always done as a last resort punishment by my father when my behaviour did not improve when other punishments were given. It made me respect my elders and have a healthy respect for the rules of my father's house and society.

There certainly is. On a sliding scale from the Fred and Rose West parenting style to my mum slapping my legs. Nowt wrong with what my mum did, guess what, I deserved it and knew what was coming, lol.
A have a very healthy respect for my parents and they didn't hit me to gain it.

If only this could happen today, we would all be better off as a society.

So the smacking didn't make you behave you did it anyway - so what did the smacking teach you?

Yeah lets go round smacking little people because it does teach them right from wrong. Right?
My goody goody two shoes sister was never slapped, boys tend to be not as well behaved, even after growing up.

You are quite correct RR, It is right, glad you agree.
If parents don't conform to the new ban, then just give them a good smacking.
Surely if a child reaches out to touch something dangerous, the wisest thing to do is to tap the child's outreached hand?
if you are close enough to "tap" the child's hand, you are close enough to remove the child.
