The other day I came home from work and saw what looked like muddy paw marks on the patio windows. The mud came from some building work that's going on next door. Just now, I heard what sounded like someone making squeaking sounds with their hands on the glass. Just looked outside to see a fox running away. Anyone else had anything like this? Foxes do have such strange habits - they love digging in the patio pots as well.

I think the fox may have smelt something it liked in your house.
Its probably trying to establish territory, which includes your garden.

The garden is already the territory. I moved a camelia in a pot from the patio to the end of the garden the other day. The fox was determined to remove the plant info label from the stem. One half of it was one the lawn in the morning and the other half was removed the next night. I thought it would leave the plant alone after that but it's on it's side again this morning. They do have some strange habits.
mr mally woke up on the settee and there was a fox just sitting in front of tv ,another came in and stole one of my best sandals and another just strolled passed me as I was sitting in the conservatory and jumped on to the drainingboard in the kitchen , they also dig my pots .
oh yes forgot ,they leave mounds in the garden and so far when I've dug them up have found a driving glove, tights and the remains of a pet in a plastic bag ,which was gross .
Frankly I wouldn't put up with it, as many wouldn't if a cat was digging up their garden. They are wild animals with the capacity to bite and kill small pets. Encouraging them to become partially domesticated is doing them no good at all. Perhaps if those who welcome the cuddly wuddly foxes into their homes and gardens were given the opportunity to see a hen house after foxy woxy had visited, or a new born lamb with its intestines pulled out by foxy may change their minds.
I do not encourage them or feed them but they are tricky creatures .

mallyh - yes, it is a worry that they are so brazen that they will try to get into the house although the french windows were open until late in the evening during the summer and the foxes did seem to keep away. I did wonder if the council had secretly cullled some as you don't see half as many around as you used to.
what with them and the badgers who are destructive it's driving me mad x
I would love a hedgehog though x
I have tried similar for cats it worked until it rains.
I've used Scoot but it didnt work, tried those sonic things but they didnt work either.
I tried the sonic ones and they only thing that it deterred was my grandson as it hurt his ears .
The foxes we visit sneak into the nursery grounds next and steal discarded balls.
I'd love to have a fox visit me. Love them.

You can have one of mine if you like. One night we heard a noise and looked out and there were 5 of them down by the garden shed. Probably a mother with grown up cubs
The local foxes go to the local school playground until the bushes grew too tall I used to watch them. The cubs were all over the place on different bits of equipment. Great fun, but agree with the wild creatures thing. Strangely they seem to be doing what early cats did with our ancestors though. Just moving in and adapting to a better for them way of life
