Free Computer Clean
13 Answers
Hi all,
Can anyone give me a link to a free virus clean site?
I've tried Avast and AVG, but although they claim to be free, they want my credit card details.
AVG claims I have several performance issues, and I'd like to get rid of them, without having to pay for it.
TIA

As much I as I appreciate your help, you don't understand what I'm after.
I've installed Avast, and I've run the virus/performance check. If I want to resolve the issues it has found, I have to supply my Visa details. I don't want to give anyone any financial details.
Is there anywhere I can get a virus check and resolve free ?

I've used Housecall in the past.
But your own AV (AVG) should be able to do it.
However if you're only looking for performance improvements, then I'd forget it were I you. Try increasing RAM, checking if you need a bigger hard drive, or investing in a new PC.

Avast's free anti-virus product is excellent (I use it myself) but it does occasionally try to tell you that you need another (paid-for) product to get rid of all the nasty stuff it claims to have found. The reality is that most (all?) of what it finds can safely be left in place anyway.
If you really want to use a free 'clean-up' program then the free version of CCleaner can do the job for you
https:/ /www.cc leaner. com/
as can the equally good Glary Utilities:
https:/ /www.gl arysoft .com/
(There are dozens more programs which claim to do a similar job but many of them can cause more problems than they fix. Those are the only two products which I'd use myself).

Tubby. I tend to agree with the general tone of caution.
Virus checkers are not very good at identifying problems with PCs or Macs.
What problems do YOU think you’ve got?
How old is your PC? How much RAM?
Old, sluggish PCs are almost never magically restoredto health by tonics you buy on the internet. As Geezer says, if you want a super-duper go-fast PC, you might have to buy one!

I've got a Dell D530m Latitude. For what I use it for it's fine.
However, after I switch it on, about 15 minutes later the screen goes off, and comes back immediately. If I'm using Qbasic, I have to come out and start again. If I'm playing a game *** Freecell or Solitaire, it freezes so I have come out and go back in again. Sometimes the internet freezes. I just wondered if there is a minor virus on my PC that is causing this.
