They didn't - he lost the popular vote (although admittedly not by much) and got in through the quirks of our wonderful electoral system.

It's a bit more complex than people not liking Churchill. People wanted a fresh start after the war, a government to rebuild for the peacetime. Churchill was much admired as a great wartime leader, but not the best man (especially being a Tory) to do that rebuilding job.
..what I mean is people voted FOR Labour, not AGAINST Churchill.
