2 red kites waddling around my field. Why are they on the ground?

Grass is short as horses continually feed on it.

Probably because they saw a crow and bottled it.. I saw a red kite at the weekend being chased by a crow

theyve chased off the flock of crows here. Pigeons dont seem bothered.

I was out on the bike recently and saw one in the middle of a freshly-ploughed field, which would fit the profile/feeding pattern suggested by some posters.
