Some recent studies have suggested that 8 hours sleep each night is possibly too much and that 6 hours is a better figure to aim for.

When I was younger I hardly needed any sleep. (In my early twenties, when I first started teaching, I went to bed for three hours on a Tuesday night, three hours on a Thursday night and 4 hours on a Sunday night. Those 10 hours per week were all I needed and, given that it usually took me an hour to get to sleep, my actual weekly total was probably closer to 7 hours).

These days I tend to be semi-nocturnal. I went to bed at 6am this morning and got up 10 hours later at 4pm. However it had probably taken me 2 or 3 hours to get to sleep, so my total time sleeping was possibly around 7 or 8 hours.

My sleeping patterns can be very irregular though. I might stay up for 30 hours and sleep for only 3 or 4, followed by being up for 20 hours and sleeping for 12.
I rarely sleep for more than 7 hours and wake up by 6.30 even if I go to bed after midnight. I do like to catnap for half an hour at weekends though, usually after lunch.
I try to, I find I need a good nights sleep. Trouble is I suffer from sleep apnea, so it is not quality sleep.
I average about 6 hours.
It varies, recently after years of 4_5 hours a night I am sleeping far better some nights 10 hours some six, with the odd almost sleepless one. I fall asleep during the day sometimes but still sleep at night. It's as if I have a lifetimes sleep debt to repay.
Rowan, probably something to do with being on shifts when you were a nurse. I know that when I was a shift worker ( permanent nights for 22 years ) it really cocked my sleeping pattern up.
6 hours is good for me. 7 would be nice, but it's rare. My work hours changed a month ago...up at 6am. I'm struggling to get more than 5.5 hours at night ...but I'm out for about an hour at 4-5pm. I'm definitely a night person.
I can sleep for 8/9 hours. Problem is getting up to the loo at least once per night which disturbs my sleep pattern - I've put it down to age!
I love my sleep and get my eight hours. In fact when I wake in the mornings, I have to force myself out of bed when I could cheerfully sleep on.
