Larder Fridge

Hi DIY ABers out there, for some reason, the back of our larder fridge (bottom section at the back) has frozen up and Mr. Chox is about to defrost it for me (such a wonderful hubby!). Once he's got all the ice off the back of the fridge interior, can anyone suggest how I can keep it frost free? do you think it's got something to do with the temperature in the fridge - should I have a look at the dial and adjust it accordingly? It's never frosted up before, so am at a bit of a loss. Many thanks, cheers, chox.

The back of a larder fridge normally DOES have a layer of ice, which then thaws and drains down the small hole at the back....and then it frosts up again....that's how they work. Make sure the drain hole is clear....perhaps the temperature in the past was too warm....it should be 3 to 5 C.

...should have said, the only way to know if a fridge is working at the optimum temperature is to use a small digital thermometer. Guesswork just doesn't work!

As Ginge says, my larder fridge frosts up and then defrosts by itself.

Thanks both - the icing up in our fridge was quite thick, so Mr. Chox is going to take a look at it tomorrow. We've got one of those little plastic gizmos for poking down the hole at the back of the fridge, and it seems all clear and not blocked up. Anyway, thanks for your advice, much appreciated. I love my larder fridge. I don't know how I fitted everything in a fridge freezer.

I had this problem a few months ago, there is an heating element, controlled by a switch, the switch can play up from time to time, ie not come on, I just carried on defrosting it myself, as call someone out can be expensive, and sadly its cheaper to buy another ( sometimes) depending on the age of the fridge. However good news, mine just started working again for whatever reason? and as been fine for weeks now. But I would say get the hoover behind it and give the internal motor and switches a good go, because they do attract lots of cob webs and dust, inturn stop the switch working. Don't forget to power off first

As you already know the hole takes the melted ice away, and yes this does need to be clear, but this is nothing to do with the fridge frosting up, the small heating element is not coming on, this is located in the back body of the fridge, that you won't see, but the switch will be exposed somewhere near the main compresser/ motor.
