Plant it and it grows.
Choose the fattest, juiciest cloves from a supermarket bought bulb of garlic and plant in free draining soil in a sunny spot. Plant about 2 inches deep, 6 inches apart with the flat end down anytime from October onwards in the UK. In severe frosts you may need to cover the plants with straw. Each clove should have turned into a new bulb by the following July - don't forget to water well in dry weather. You'll know they are ready to lift when the tops turn yellow and dry. Just lift gently with a fork, brush off the soil and hang up in a cool dry place or plait them like the French do !
Garlic is grown from cloves. If you are just experimenting and want to minimise expense, then supermarket bought is fine. Other wise best to buy garlic which is certified virus free - from fruit & veg supplier at 3-4 for two large bulbs.
Break bulb into cloves, plant these upright with tips just covered with soil. Plant from autumn to early spring depending on type. Prefers light, free draining soil. Full sun, sheltered from wind. Only water in very dry periods - bulb requires dry conditions to flourish. I grow in pots. Good luck !
Hi dicann, bit of extra info for you ;-)

If you plant garlic round roses it helps stop aphids :-).... just a bit of a green gardening tip..... B. xx
