danny, I'd din't know you were a copper. Was that in West Yorkshire (Bradford, perhaps)? It's just that I know someone who was fairly high up there in the 70s / 80s (had his hands burnt in the Valley Parade fire).
ZM. Bradford, but I retired before the fire. Who are you talking about?
As far as I can see on Google... which tried to alter my question to "racism"...
Ageism has only been illegal since 2012.

I am glad he got the job, as he clearly is dedicated enough, but I am beginning to think that awful word of "snowflake" has been defined as the wrong group of people!
His name was Osborne.
An old colleague of mine was a single constable in the Garde and lived in the Garde Barracks in Waterford. He had passed his Sergeant's exam but promotion then was filling dead men's shoes. One day the local priest called at the Barracks and enquired of the Captain why young E....n did not attend Mass every Sunday. The officer was summoned and the priest asked why he was not attending on Sunday.. My friend said he was no longer bothered in Catholicism. The priest then demanded he contribute to the collection every Sunday even though he was no longer attending.
The officer told the priest where the exit to the baracks was and not to bother him at 'his home' again.
Camillus never got his promotion in the Garde. The priest saw to that.
So Camillus joined the Met and that's where I met him. At least the Met acknowledged he had passed the Sergeant's exam and later gave him his stripes although the Met promotion exam was different to other forces
Retro, I got my promotion 18 months later but could never be bothered to sit the Inspectors exam.I was quite happy to remain in the rank that was the backbone of the force.
ZM, sorry but that name did't ring a bell, he must have transferred in after 1980.
Ah, OK.
This is a clear example of a fundamentally good idea - the avoidance of discrimination, being allowed to swing far too far the other way, and actually implement the very levels of discrimination it is supposed to alleviate.

Principles still need people to implement and interpret them, and that can lead to errors in judgement - which happily on this occasion, have been rectified.
Did some joint work with our local Community Bobby a few years ago. He was transferred to Traffic during this time. When I asked if it was promotion for him, his response was in the negative. He said he would never be promoted as he was a practicing Christian. Found it strange, and a bit sad.

From what I have seen over the past few years, practising Christians have only been penalised professionally because they have insisted on ensuring that everyone around them is aware of their faith - often to the detriment of their professional responsibilities.

I am an atheist - it never proved a problem at work because it never came up - I doubt any of my managers knew, much less cared.
Maybe you are right AH, but in all the time I worked with him he never mentioned he was a Christian and certainly didn't "preach". He treated everyone with respect and was a great listener. Much respected in the area - parents often approached him for advice about their "troublesome" offspring and he helped many a young person back on to the straight and narrow.
