Often, big companies require this type of stuff for insurance purposes and for entry to their pension scheme. I had a medical when joining Nationwide Building Society in 1973 as a trainee manager
Another thing is drugs and the type of people who use them has come a long way in seven years so they have to check everybody out nowadays.
Not, it's not uncommon. If a company is going to pay your dependents 2, 3 or 4 years salary by way of free life assurance if you die, they want to be certain you're healthy !! Similarly, your company's pension scheme don't want to be paying out a pension sooner than they have to, so they need to know your state your health. You'll probably find that a lot of large companies these days insist on a medical and some will be more stringent than others. Also, if you're going to be working in a noisy factory, they will need to know if you suffer from any hearing defects before you start so that they can monitor your hearing levels. This is to partly to protect your own health and also to protect themselves from being sued for damages for lost hearing due to working in a noisy environment.
