My TV has built in freeview but I can't pause or record. Maybe on a newer smart TV you could.
I thinik you need a freeview recorder to do that.
Only if you have your freeview through a digital recorder box as I have.
Freeview is, in itself, just a service that transmits TV signals terrestrially. It's no more able to provide any type of recording facility than, say, your local radio transmitter does.

However you can buy set-top boxes that add in recording facilities (including 'pause'). The brand leader is undoubtedly Humax:

(The model shown there has a 500 GB drive, providing up to 250 hours recording time. There are also 1 TB and 2 TB versions available, at £218 and £268 respectively).

thank you all
I have a HUMAX HDR-FOX T2 PVR which is a few years old now. I can record, playback & rewind Freeview channels via the PVR. However the subtitles playback on recorded Freeview channels are always out of sync with the subtitles appearing too soon. Subtitles recorded on channels 1,2,3,4,& 5 always playback in sync. Neither Humax or the TV companies can tell me why this happens. I don't think I will buy another Humax.
Can I tag my Freeview question on to this?! Any idea why my Dave channel on Freeview has very poor volume? It just seemed to change to very quiet a couple of weeks ago - and its the only channel it seems to happen to. Thanks
