What I don’t understand is: why has Johnson so enthusiastically accepted a 30 day deadline to find a solution to the Irish border issue when the existing deal gives him close to two years to find one. Why is he so optimistic about the former and pessimistic about the latter?!

Because 2 years of further wasted time and uncertainty damaging the economy is unacceptable, but sticking to the latest agreed date and maximising the chance of the EU becoming aware that no deal will happen if they do now't and they'd forced it, was ok. Or at least the least awful option. One's not even sure one can legitimately leave before then anyway. Trouble is the EU are split with one part admitting they have no intent to become reasonable and the other part, equally not bothered, telling Johnson he has to come up with something the EU can consider then reject without justification. Roll on Halloween.

I fancy there is much dishonesty in Johnson’s position as plainly he is in the hands of people who want no deal at all

everyone (in the media and elsewhere) is speaking like the wresting of control of the HoC order calendar is a done deal, without which there's unlikely to be any anti no deal legislation.

What’s the problem Frau Merkel asked? How can we help? Backstop? Well if you can sort it in 30 days fine!
And yet no one points out that the existing deal gives 21 months or whatever to meet the same challenge.

We ain't leaving on October 31st -- I'm almost certain of that now. The likelihood is that there will be a General Election before then, and since if the Remain/no-no-deal Parties win they'd immediately postpone or cancel it, that rules out the date. And if Brexit-supporting Parties win they'd still at least nominally be hunting for a deal so would postpone Brexit.

I saw a report that the EU we’re planning unilaterally to extend to Oct 31 deadline.
Can they do that?

As implied, not a piece of cake. Just a 2 year delay where the EU have no intention of shifting, to remain in the same position but unable to unilaterally decide to go any more. No cake, just trap.
