My missus' sister and her partner are flying to Spain tomorrow and he only realised yesterday that his passport expired a few weeks ago.
Now correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought you couldn't travel abroad using an expired passport. However, they've been in touch with Jet2 and they've informed them that they'll be okay and he can use his expired passport.
If the passport is presented at an unmanned gate the expiry date will be checked as a matter of course. The holder will be diverted to a manned gate where the reason for the automatic gate denying entry will be flagged up.
So did I Tony. I certainly wish them well and hope it goes OK but I can never understand why people are so daft to do this. I see it on TV like Airline, how can anyone book a foreign holiday and not check their passport.
just force of habit, maybe, Prudie. You use the thing for 10 years then forget about it. I've had the occasional magazine subscription run out, so I know how easy it is for it to happen.
Maybe, maybe these two don't travel very often. I have had to enter my passport expiry date in online for flights and holidays about 6 times already this year - completing airline API for example, has to be done well before departure, I've also had to supply it to Spanish accommodations - it's a requirement by law.
It was a few years ago, but my Dad discovered his passport had expired before a trip to Holland. On checking, he found he could travel with it.
After all, an expired passport still proves ID.
Just pondering here - why should a passport expire anyway? The information remains the same, the name (unless married or changed by deed poll in which case you would probably think about changing it) date of birth and place of birth, so why does it matter if it is not renewed every ten years, apart from making money for the government?
Personal details could have changed but folk may have forgotten to change their passport. Photos could be out of date and new technology/security features can be added to new passports.
