What are the rules on what can be published? Where did they get the letter? I suspect her dad sold it to them and if that's the case there is no case. If they acquired it through dodgy means then probably there is a case to answer. Someone with more legal knowledge will know more.
The physical letter belonged to the person who received it and they can do what they want with it.
The copyright of the contents of the letter belongs to the person who wrote the letter.
The editor of a newspaper may own a copy of a best-selling book but that doesn't mean the newspaper can print lengthy extracts from it for a fortnight.

Having had a very very small personal taste of how the press can print factually true words and at the same time lie, I wish the Sussexes the very best in their fight. In principle I agree with media freedom but with freedom comes the freedom to take the consequences of one's actions and its about time the Mail, among others, felt some consequences.
Jeremy Vine has just discussed this and he had a lawyer on who said that; Meghan's father now owns the paper on which the letter was written but she retains possession of copyright over the words written thereon. No part of the letter can be reproduced without the approval of the person who holds the copyright.
There are precedents and the most famous of which concerned Prince Charles. He kept a journal in which, when writing about the handover of Hong Kong, he described the Chines leadership as 'appalling old waxworks'. The Mail got hold of a copy of the journal and printed parts of it. Charles sued and won, the Mail appealed a couple of times, losing both appeals. Looks like they will be paying up again.

There seem to be two separate problems here, please correct me if I'm wrong. Regarding the letter that Meghan sent to her father. I believe he sold this letter to the newspapers and they printed it so now she is suing the newspaper for printing it? Is that right and can she do that or is she saying the newspaper edited the letter to make her sound bad? I realise her father has done some silly things, but at the end of the day, he's still her father and she has completely 'ghosted' him, as they say.
The other thing that Harry is saying is complete rubbish. He doesn't seem to realise that their actions do not go down well with the press or the public and he needs to listen to what the public is saying. They really are a couple who say 'do as I say and not as I do.' I for one am fed up with all their silliness. They need to decide if they want to be Royal, or private, or celebrities. They can't be all three.

These two have bought many of the problems upon themselves. You cannot go around preaching to people then do the opposite. Also being Royalty you need to keep politics out of it and lastly MeAgain needs to understand what being Royal is about.
If they dont want to abide by protocol then fine. Stop taking tax payers money.
I think a move to the USA would suit them both to be honest.

youngmafbog I agree with you. It must be really difficult for anyone marrying into the Royal family, but especially if you come from a country that doesn't have one. I can't see why they cannot carry out the work they want to do while living in a different country where they probably won't get as much criticism and where they will have more freedom.
